SUMMARY
There are countless factors that play a critical role in influencing youth alcohol abuse in South Africa and internationally. However, this article focuses on how peer pressure, environmental influences, and socio-economic factors have collectively contributed to the alarming issue of youth alcohol abuse in South Africa. Peer pressure, stemming from the desire to fit in, feel ‘cool’ and be accepted by peers and society can lead youths to engage in risky behaviors like excessive alcohol consumption. The social environment within the rainbow nation and the international world at large, with the widespread alcohol availability and normalization, play a critical role as well. High youth unemployment rates, poverty, limited access to education, and inadequate recreational activities further perpetuate the problem of youth alcohol abuse.
